Image use and licensing

Editorial photographs on What's On Durham are published with attribution. Many images may be reused under the terms described on our Terms of Use. For commercial use, syndication, or uses not covered there, contact us before republishing.

What you can do without asking

• Share a link to the page where the image appears (social posts, email, etc.).
• Quote or embed the image in context with visible credit matching the caption on the page (photographer / source and a link back to the article or listing).
• Personal, non-commercial reference (e.g. saving for trip planning).

When to contact us first

• Commercial reproduction (ads, merchandise, paid publications).
• Cropping or editing that changes meaning, or removing credit lines.
• AI training datasets or bulk scraping of our image CDN.
• Print runs, broadcast, or third-party syndication.

Email [email protected] with the page URL, how you plan to use the image, and your deadline. We will confirm rights where we hold them or put you in touch with the photographer or rights holder.

Credit and metadata

Each credited image on event, place, news, and blog detail pages shows a caption and license links when applicable. Do not strip IPTC or on-page credit when republishing with permission.

Third-party and stock images

Some photos are licensed from photographers, venues, or stock providers. Those images may have stricter limits than our site-wide terms. We will tell you if separate fees or contracts apply.
